That was probably the funniest experience I've ever had with college a cappella.
My sister's jazz a cappella group, Take Five, was in town last night, and as a thank-you to our neighbours who were playing host to the male half of the group, they gave a very small concert in said neighbours' living room. It was pretty awesome--they did Howlin' Wolf's "Built For Comfort", and "Rehab", and my sister's big solo song, "Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen". (Which, I think, I may have to upload and distribute soon, since one of their concerts got recorded.)
Then, at my dad's request, they did "Luck Be A Lady" from Guys and Dolls. Which is soloed by a really adorable guy named Will. The acoustics in the living room were perfect, and the entire group was in great voice.
Now, our neighbours have a cat.
My mom told me about going over there once and having this cat--Peanut--come up to her and sit in her lap. She claimed that Peanut had to be twenty pounds at least. I had never seen Peanut before, and didn't really believe her.
But the cat wandered in about twenty minutes before the mini-concert.
I swear this cat is the love child of Jabba the Hutt and Oliver. He's huge. I mean, he's a giant tub of lard that purrs. When he sits down, it's like this puddle of cat spreads out on the floor. He's very sweet-tempered, and he purrs like a Harley if you pay even a little attention to him, but he's maybe four pounds shy of the Guinness Book of World Records.
So Peanut was hanging around during the mini-concert. And then, for some reason, when Will started singing, he decided he wanted in on the action.
No sooner does Take Five start in on the number than Peanut comes waddling onto the carpet and twining himself around Will's ankles. Of course, those of us who were watching were in stitches, and poor Will was trying very, very hard to keep a straight face.
He tried singing to Peanut, which made us laugh even harder. And then Peanut started "singing" along--and he actually seemed to have the rhythm of the song down.
I laughed so hard I cried. The group laughed so hard they flubbed one of the key changes at the end. And Peanut got big hugs from about two-thirds of the group, including Will, after the song was over.
